Spices, a store in Tel Aviv

Maybe it’s not as fun as a trip to an outdoor market, but sometimes you need to know what spices you’re buying and what their best use.
Enter Spices, a great shop in Tel Aviv (though a bit of a hike from the Sea; best to have a car or a ton of time to go here).

Spices has cookware, kitchen stuff, gourmet groceries, and an extremely helpful staff. One whitish spice I did not recognize is something you put in coffee. Ask questions and you'll leave the store with great and useful memories.

Clearly this is not the best picture of Azura's kitchen (and not just because of that dude's noggin) but I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't give you a little something more about this fantastic little Jerusalem restaurant that we can't stop raving about.

Jaffa Flea Market: closed Saturdays

Like many/most things in Israel, the flea market in Jaffa is completely shut down during Shabbat.

Azura Restaurant Rocks!

It's not easy to find, but it's worth the search. Azura restaurant is on a side street of Machane Yehuda, the well-known street and market in Jerusalem.

Check out the menu below. I am certain you can't go wrong with anything they offer - soups seem to be a favorite of regular customers (and the Shiksa).

Nachalat Binyamin Artists Market

My Physical Therapist – who recently became a US citizen, by the way, which does not mean he gave up his Israeli – told me about the Nachalat Binyamin Artists Market. It’s Tuesdays and Fridays. I specifically planned to be in Tel Aviv for this incredible market, and recommend you do the same.
I made a small photo gallery/album of artists/stalls so you have a feel for some of the great work offered. Look towards the bottom of the Left column of the screen.

Captain Super Jew’s Logo

CSJ is the one who spotted his logo in the Carmel Market in Tel Aviv. He didn’t want to buy it – in t-shirt or sweatshirt – because he did not know when he’d wear it. Um, every day. Now I have to figure out a way to make it his official ShiksaInIsrael logo.

what happens when a doctor and a chef get together? healthy gourmet.

Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef Shani Mador and Dr. Rani Polak teach healthy/gourmet cooking workshops in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
the class starts at a local market - Carmel in Tel Aviv; Machane Yehuda in Jerusalem - where spices and ingredients are introduced and purchased. part two is a cooking demonstration and tasting.

the shiksa is intrigued by this class but is not sure she has the time to participate. we'll see.

Be'er Sheva Bedouin Market

This is the picture I was taking while some kids were trying to unzip my mini backpack and steal my cherry chapstick. yes, folks, that's what I keep in the pocket-easiest-to-access. too bad I wasn't quick enough to snap a shot of the semi scared kid when I busted him. I decided to wear my little pack on my front after that encounter. needless to say, the Bedouin Market in Be'er Sheva - once a place where camels and goats and spices were traded - is now a place where once can buy cheap Taiwanese toys and see other tourists. Is it worth the stop? maybe, but it's far from the best market you'll ever experience. cool to be in the capital of the Negev though.


p.s. I am pretty sure that kid with the megaphone is ranting something about "everything 1 shekel"
