Brunch at Jaffa’s Puah Café was a happy accident for us. Like idiots, we chose Saturday to visit Jaffa (idiots because almost nothing is open, including the flea market).
I’d already expended CSJ’s walking tolerance when I pushed him to explore the empty stalls of the market instead of grabbing a bread product from Abulafia, the famed bakery. I think CSJ sticks with me because things usually work out for me.
Case in point: turning a corner off an empty street we spotted the colorful outdoor seating and awnings of Puah Café. There was a bit of a line. “Looks popular,” I said. Translation: people in line who don’t appear to be tourists signify something good to me.
“Okay,” CSJ said.
“You sure?”
“Just go in.”
We sat at the bar, the only seats available in the house. The bartender made a perfectly balanced cappuccino for me. We also got lemonada with mint. CSJ ordered a salad because I promised we’d hit Abulafia on our way out of town. French toast for me because it said something about cucumbers and cheese. Unfortunately there was some sort of mess up in the kitchen; I believe our order was lost. CSJ got antsy. The restaurant cleared out. When our food finally arrived it was quite good. Unfortunately I received the wrong French Toast. I think you’re now wondering how this accident was happy. I’ll tell you: I’d definitely go back. Great vibe in there – I have to call it urban hippie (mellow+green+street smart+slightly grungy). I’d liked it. You’ll like it.
